We made a huge mistake when we moved back in June. We didn’t get rid of a lot of our STUFF. The attic in our old house was COMPLETELY full. Lee and I are both a little bit of a packrat. We had the mentality of “What if we need it one day?” or “We might want to use it when we move.” Once we got moved in to our current house we realized just how much stuff we had fit in that attic.
Our new house has a lot more space than our old one, but our storage space in this house was full as soon as we moved in! Partly because we didn’t have much of an organizational plan, but mainly because we had held on to so much when we moved. When we bought this house we had plans for the basement to be kind of a TV/football/movie watching room, but as we tried to get the main level of the house organized the basement pretty much became a junk room. It was bad. Really bad. We have a guest room in the basement but I was too embarrassed for people to go down there.
Last week before Lee went back to work we spent a couple of days organizing the basement. I really wanted to get it done before the new year, and for the most part we did. We have a huge yard sale/donate pile still taking up a lot of space, but I’m pretty satisfied with how it looks right now.
Now that we’ve got the basement pretty much how we want it, I’m motivated to declutter the rest of the house! I tend to get overwhelmed with this task, so I’ve tried to find some plans that are easy for me to follow. I had been planning on following Clean Mama‘s Decluttering plan, but a few nights ago I stumbled on Allie Casazza’s Declutter Like a Mother challenge. I think I’m going to try to stick to this one. I like that she says to set a timer and work for 30 minutes each day. I feel like I can handle 30 minutes…the girls may not take long naps, but I think I can get them to rest for at least 30 minutes every day!
Last week’s focus was bathrooms and closets. I came in late so I missed the bathroom part and picked up with the closets. (She says if you start late just to jump in where you are) This week is the kitchen and I’m excited to get that decluttered!
Are you doing any decluttering for the New Year?
