Since we’re about halfway through the month, I thought I’d check in and share how we’re doing on our budget so far. Lee and I have had a budget pretty much since we got married. We plan the budget in order to be able to save money every month. There are probably only a handful of times that we’ve actually stuck to the budget and saved as much as we planned. (Don’t get me wrong, we’re not spending money we don’t have, but we just haven’t been saving like we had hoped!)
I decided this year I really wanted us to stick to our budget. Now that I stay home with the girls I really want to be conscientious about what we’re spending and where our money is going.
I’m happy to say that we’re doing pretty well on the budget this month. We’re about halfway through, or just under halfway, what we planned to spend in most categories. We’re on track to stay on or even under budget! We have a few thing we’d like to buy for the house if there’s money left at the end of the month, so we’ll probably end up staying right on budget.
We usually spend most of our money on groceries and eating out. I would plan meals and buy groceries for the week, but on the weekends we would end up eating out at least a couple of times. So far this month we’ve done better about that. We took the girls to a birthday party late Saturday afternoon and grabbed something for dinner on the way home, and then we went out to lunch Sunday after church (but the girls ate free so we didn’t spend TOO much). The fact that we’ve been eating at home means we haven’t been wasting as much food. We would choose to eat out and the food we had at home would be forgotten about and go to waste. We haven’t done that near as much this month.
I’ve also been doing my grocery shopping at WalMart and Aldi to save money. I use the WalMart grocery pickup when I can and I LOVE it! I order my groceries online, select a pickup time, drive to WalMart and they load the groceries in my car for me. One day I had to pick up groceries while the girls were both sick, so I loaded them in the car in their pajamas and they slept through the whole thing. Grocery pickup saves me money, too, by only buying what I need. I don’t make any impulse purchases because I don’t even go in! (You can use this link and save $10 on your first trip!) You can even get a little rebate on your order with Ebates! If I can’t make it to WalMart, or didn’t get my order in on time, I go to Aldi. It’s just so much less expensive than other stores. I’ll be completely honest though, Publix is still my favorite grocery store. I might have to start tracking their sales better so I can do some of my shopping there. But until then, I’ll be a WalMart and Aldi shopper.
Barring anything crazy happening, we should be able to stay on budget this month for the first time in about as long as I can remember! I’ll check back in at the end of the month with how we finished out the month!
